What do German cockroaches look like and where do you see them? Usually found in the kitchen area, this insect is little, 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch in length, and medium yellowish-brown. German roaches can be distinguished from other roaches by two black parallel stripes on the anterior, dorsal part of the thorax. If it is not the size of the thumb and it is reddish brown to black, it’s a female wood roach. If it is dark mahogany and the size of your thumb, then it is a smoky brown roach. If it is bigger (up to 1.5 inches), has wings, and is reddish-brown with a lighter border over the head, then it’s an American roach.
Notorious for their global distribution, German cockroaches are easily recognisable by 2 dark longitudinal stripes on their pronotum. Adults grow to approximately 12-15mm in length. Females take 35 – 40 eggs in an ootheca (egg case) until they are ready to hatch. Hatch in 1 month. Nymphs take between 6 weeks to 6 months to develop into adults, normally 3-4 generations annually. As it is most commonly found inside, it prefers moist, humid conditions and are typically found in kitchens and bathrooms in homes and commercial properties.
Adults are half an inch long, light to medium brown with 2 dark, distinctive stripes behind the head. The young are wingless, smaller and much darker in color, with a light stripe in their backs. German cockroaches will eat anything. They stay close to food and water source. Females reproduce one egg capsule every 3-4 weeks. Each capsule contains 25-45 eggs. Infestations are often found in kitchens, bathrooms, but can inhabit other areas if there is a heavy population or you’ve run them into each other with the repellent effect of insecticides.
If the population is large enough, they will spill over to other chambers. These roaches are mostly active at night. If German roaches are seen active during the day, it most likely is due to overcrowding in their hiding places or a shortage of water and food supply. Cracks and crevices are their harborage areas; they spend about 75% of the time in these harborages. First instar nymphs need a crack of about 1/32″ whereas, adults need inch width. German cockroach nymphs are smaller than most other cockroaches; hence, they are able to conceal themselves in many places and remain protected.
